Bangkok is experiencing flooding and travel disruption following periods of heavy rainfall in September 2026. While localised flooding has affected several roads and parts of the city, Bangkok's two major international airports - Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang International Airport - remain operational.

For Indian travellers planning a Thailand holiday, the situation does not mean that Bangkok is closed to visitors. However, airport transfers, road journeys and some sightseeing plans may take longer than usual. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is advising visitors to check conditions before travelling and allow additional time for journeys.

Here is what Indian tourists should know before travelling to Bangkok during the current flood situation.

Bangkok Flood Situation in September 2026

Bangkok Floods 2026 Travel Guide for Indian Tourists.webp

Heavy rainfall has resulted in localised flooding across Bangkok and surrounding areas. The Thai government has been coordinating flood-response measures as several areas have experienced waterlogging and disruption to transportation.

Conditions can change quickly depending on rainfall, drainage and traffic. Bangkok's official road-flood monitoring system is also tracking water levels at various locations across the city.

For tourists, the main concern is currently getting around the city, rather than the closure of Bangkok's major tourist infrastructure.

Are Bangkok Airports Open?

Yes. Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) remain open and operational. However, roads connecting the airports with the city can experience flooding, congestion and delays.

Travellers should check their flight status directly with their airline before leaving for the airport.

Suvarnabhumi Airport

Suvarnabhumi Airport continues to operate flights normally. The main access routes remain available, but authorities advise travellers to avoid the Lat Krabang route because of significant standing water. Motorway No. 7 and the Burapha Withi Expressway are recommended alternatives where appropriate.

Travellers are advised to allow:

At least 3 hours for international flights
At least 2 hours for domestic flights

Extra travel time should also be considered for the journey to the airport itself.

Don Mueang International Airport

Don Mueang Airport is also operating. However, surrounding roads may experience waterlogging and congestion.

TAT advises passengers travelling to Don Mueang to allow 2–3 additional hours of travel time, check traffic and weather conditions and consider alternative routes or transport options.

Are Flights to Bangkok Being Cancelled?

There is no indication of a general shutdown of Bangkok's airports. Both major airports remain operational.

However, individual flights can be affected by changing weather conditions. Indian travellers should therefore check their airline's official flight status before heading to the airport.

The bigger issue for many passengers may be road access to the airport, particularly during periods of heavy rain or traffic congestion.

Bangkok Public Transport During the Floods

Rail transport can be a useful alternative when roads are affected.

According to the latest TAT travel advisory:

Airport Rail Link: Operating
SRT Red Line: Operating
BTS Skytrain: Operating
MRT: Operating

Travellers should check the latest service information before starting their journey because conditions around individual stations and connecting roads can vary.

For tourists staying near BTS or MRT stations, rail transport may be more convenient than travelling by road during periods of heavy congestion.

Which Roads Are Affected?

Flooding and waterlogging are affecting some roads and routes across Bangkok and nearby areas. Conditions can change throughout the day depending on rainfall and drainage.

The city's official flood-monitoring platform provides information on road water levels and flood-monitoring points.

For airport journeys, the Lat Krabang route to Suvarnabhumi is specifically being avoided because of significant waterlogging.

Travellers should check the exact route to their destination rather than assuming that an entire neighbourhood is inaccessible.

Should Indian Travellers Cancel Their Bangkok Trip?

There is no general tourism shutdown in Bangkok. TAT says tourism services and visitor facilities continue to operate, although localised flooding can affect some roads and journeys.

Whether to continue with a trip depends on your travel dates, accommodation location and itinerary.

Travellers with upcoming holidays should monitor:

Flight status
Weather updates
Airport access
Hotel location
Public transport
Local flooding
Road conditions

If your trip is flexible, keeping some activities changeable can help if heavy rain affects outdoor plans.

Are Bangkok Tourist Attractions Open?

Bangkok's tourism services continue to operate, but access to individual attractions can vary depending on local weather and flooding.

Popular attractions include:

Grand Palace
Wat Arun
Wat Pho
Chinatown
Chatuchak Market
ICONSIAM
Asiatique
Khao San Road

Before visiting an outdoor attraction, check local conditions and transport availability.

If rain makes outdoor sightseeing difficult, travellers can consider indoor activities such as shopping malls, museums, restaurants and covered markets.

Tips for Indian Travellers Visiting Bangkok During the Floods

1. Leave Early for the Airport

Do not rely on normal Bangkok travel times. Allow extra time for traffic, waterlogging and possible route changes.

2. Use Rail Transport Where Practical

BTS, MRT, Airport Rail Link and the Red Line can provide alternatives to road travel in some parts of Bangkok.

3. Check Your Hotel Location

Before booking accommodation, check the surrounding roads and access to BTS or MRT stations.

4. Keep Your Itinerary Flexible

Avoid scheduling several activities that require long road journeys on the same day.

5. Check Conditions Before Leaving Your Hotel

Rainfall and road conditions can change quickly. Check weather, traffic and public transport updates before setting out.

6. Carry Rain Protection

A lightweight raincoat, waterproof bag or phone pouch and suitable footwear can be useful during Bangkok's rainy conditions.

7. Avoid Floodwater

Do not walk or drive through deep or fast-moving floodwater. Water can conceal drains, potholes and other hazards.

Thailand Extends Travel Measures During the Flood Situation

The Thai government has also introduced measures to make travel easier during the flooding situation. As of September 27, authorities extended toll exemptions across several expressways and motorways, including M7 and the Don Mueang Tollway, through September 29, 2026, as part of efforts to reduce travel difficulties.

Travellers should still check the latest government announcements because these measures can change.

What Indian Tourists Should Check Before Flying

If you have a Bangkok trip coming up, check these points before leaving India:

✔ Flight status
✔ Airport transfer route
✔ Hotel location and accessibility
✔ BTS/MRT and Airport Rail Link services
✔ Current weather conditions
✔ Local flood updates
✔ Travel insurance coverage
✔ Flexible sightseeing options

TAT has also provided traveller assistance contacts, including TAT Contact Centre 1672, Tourist Police 1155 and AOT Contact Centre 1722.

Final Takeaway

The Bangkok floods of September 2026 are causing localised flooding and travel delays, but Bangkok's major international airports remain operational and tourism services continue to operate.

For Indian travellers, the most important issue is currently allowing extra time for airport transfers and local journeys. Rail services can provide useful alternatives to flooded or congested roads, while sightseeing plans should remain flexible.

Before travelling, check your airline, hotel, transport operator and official Thai travel updates for the latest conditions.
