In an extraordinary display of national pride, underwater skill, and strategic tourism promotion, India scripted a historic chapter on May 2, 2026 - attempting the Guinness World Record for the Largest National Flag Unfurled Underwater. The landmark event unfolded in the crystal-clear waters off Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep) in the Andaman Islands, captivating audiences both domestically and around the globe.

A Record-Breaking Flag Beneath the Sea

A Record-Breaking Flag Beneath the Sea in 2026

At the heart of this daring attempt was a colossal 60 metre × 40 metre Indian national flag - the Tricolour - unfurled beneath the ocean surface near the world-renowned Radhanagar Beach, consistently ranked among Asia's finest beaches.

The sheer scale of this endeavour places it among the most ambitious underwater flag exhibitions ever attempted anywhere in the world. Executing such a feat required extraordinary levels of planning, precision, and physical endurance from every diver involved.

200+ Divers Unite in an Unprecedented Underwater Formation

More than 200 professional divers participated in the record attempt, working in perfect unison beneath the waves. Their coordination and discipline were on full display as they maneuvered the massive flag in challenging underwater conditions.

As a spectacular addition to the main event, the team also attempted to build a 20-metre tall human pyramid underwater - a feat that added another layer of ambition and drama to an already historic occasion. This formation served as a powerful visual symbol of unity, strength, and national pride.

Strategic Vision: Putting Andaman on the Global Tourism Map

Beyond the spectacle, the event carried a deliberate and far-sighted purpose - to position the Andaman Islands as a world-class scuba diving and adventure tourism destination.

The Andaman archipelago already boasts:

Pristine, turquoise waters with visibility of up to 30 metres in peak season
Vibrant coral reef ecosystems teeming with marine biodiversity
Iconic dive sites including Havelock Island, Neil Island, and Barren Island
Growing infrastructure for domestic and international tourists

By staging a globally recognized record attempt in these waters, India sends a clear message to adventure travelers and dive enthusiasts worldwide: the Andaman Islands deserve a place on every serious diver's bucket list.

Why This Moment Matters for India

This record attempt is not simply a sporting achievement - it is a convergence of culture, identity, and strategic ambition.

Unfurling the national flag beneath the ocean is a deeply symbolic act. It takes the spirit of the Tricolour — saffron for courage, white for peace, green for prosperity - to a realm rarely explored by national symbolism. Beneath the waves, where silence reigns and the physical world demands extraordinary effort, the flag becomes a statement of what India is capable of.

From a broader perspective, this event:

Elevates India's international profile in adventure sports and marine tourism
Inspires a new generation of Indian divers and outdoor athletes
Demonstrates world-class organizational capability in executing complex underwater operations
Draws global media attention to one of India's most ecologically valuable island regions

Andaman Islands: A Diving Destination Ready for the World Stage

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have long been a hidden gem - breathtaking, biodiverse, and largely undiscovered by mass tourism. Events like this record attempt have the power to change that narrative.

Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island), where the event took place, is already home to Radhanagar Beach, which has been listed by Time magazine among the best beaches in Asia. The island offers a growing number of certified dive centres, underwater photography opportunities, and eco-tourism experiences that rival destinations like the Maldives and Thailand's Koh Tao.

With improved air connectivity, infrastructure upgrades, and events of this magnitude drawing global coverage, the Andaman Islands are poised for a new era of responsible, high-value tourism.

Awaiting Official Confirmation

As of publication, the Guinness World Records organisation has not yet issued official confirmation of the record. Verification involves a stringent review of evidence, including video documentation, official measurements, and independent adjudication.

Regardless of the final ruling, the attempt itself has already achieved something remarkable - it has united hundreds of divers beneath the sea in the name of national pride and placed India in the global conversation around adventure tourism innovation.

The Bigger Picture

India's growing appetite for record-breaking, large-scale national events reflects a broader shift in how the country presents itself to the world — not just as an ancient civilisation or economic powerhouse, but as a dynamic, adventurous, and ambitious nation that embraces bold ideas.

From the largest yoga gathering on International Yoga Day to the grandest Republic Day parades, India has consistently demonstrated its ability to mobilize people and passion at scale. The underwater Tricolour is simply the latest - and arguably the most visually stunning — chapter in that story.
